Happy 2011 everyone! I’m currently suffering from mild depression since school started up again yesterday, but I’m very thankful to have had such a relaxing break. Puerto Rico was a blast, Christmas was great with my family, and Ryan and I celebrated NYE in NYC with some of our closest friends. I read good books, watched plenty of trashy TV (new addiction: American Pickers, anyone else?) , and of course did some baking. But this post isn’t a true baked good, there’s not even a real recipe to go along with it — just a great party idea if you love the combination of chocolate, strawberries, and alcohol as much as I do.

My friend Marissa and I dreamt these up (the creative mindpower behind epic desserts such as our Giant S’mores Cake) as a fun snack/drink to serve at her New Year’s Eve party. They’re as simple as they look — hulled out strawberries dipped in melted chocolate and filled with whatever you’d like. We combined vanilla vodka, Godiva liquor, and some chocolate syrup for a delicious shot in an edible glass. Take your shot and eat it too!

I know I said there’s not real recipe, but here are some tips for making your own Chocolate Covered Strawberry Shot Glasses:

– Try to choose strawberries as big as you can find, unless of course you want to make baby shots
– Cut the point of the strawberry off so they can stand on their own, the melted chocolate helps form a little base too which makes them even more stable
– We recommend hulling out the strawberries using a paring knife and grapefruit spoon, you have to be careful not to make them too thin or they’ll break (nothing a little melted chocolate can’t help mend!). Don’t forget to pat strawberries dry before dipping in chocolate.
– Freeze the dipped strawberry cups for maximum sturdiness, and to keep your drink cold. Let them thaw for a few minutes before serving so no one breaks any teeth
– Top with whipped cream and sprinkles for an extra special touch (we thought of the idea after already doing the grocery shopping, oh welll)

    For the base I just dipped the strawberries in chocolate and then placed them directly on a wax-paper lined cookie sheet. The melted chocolate kind of pooled around the strawberry to make a pretty base, I really didn’t do anything special. Good luck and Happy New Year!

    Me thinks pouring a bit of melted chocolate into a square ice cube tray, then placing the strawberry in would make a thicker, more sturdy base, and would work especially well with the smaller strawberries you get in your pint.

    I’d wet the tray a bit first, then stick some plastic wrap in to help lift out the chocolate.

      I would do 1 part Godiva to 1/2 part vodka and just a splash of the syrup. Try 1 oz. Godiva, 1/2 oz Vodka, splash syrup. You get the idea if you are making a big batch.

    Thanks for the post! I tried it at a dinner party and it was a HUGE success!! I originally planned to substitute champagne for the chocolate liquor but a deal in the grocery gave me a better idea. I substituted the inside drink with two Arbor mist Frozen wines -white zinfandel strawberry and Merlot Blackberry flavors. Normally, I am not for Arbor Mist but, the frozen wine were super cheap (under $4 for BOTH at my local Giant Eagle grocery store), tasted nice, and since they were frozen they held up in the shots longer without spillage. I threw the bags in the freezer when I got home before dinner and by desert (about 3 hours later) they had a nice icy consistency and were ready to be poured in the prepared chocolate covered strawberry shot glasses. Thumbs up all around from our dinner table.

      I would suggest equal parts vanilla vodka, Godiva liquor, and chocolate syrup as a starting point! But really there’s no recipe here, just whatever combination of alcohols you think would taste good served in a chocolate covered strawberry :)

    these look lovely. i love seeing fruit (and veggies) used in fun creative ways. sure this isn’t the healthiest thing – but who cares! sometimes a little indulgence is what each of us needs, whether it’s to celebrate accomplishments or to get us through tough times. personally – i will be making these for a girls night. oh yeah!

    I used a mellon-baller to hull out the strawberries. It worked perfectly! I mixed the leftover dipping chocolate with vanilla vodka and heavy cream for the filling. That way I didn’t waste any chocolate! This is a fantastic idea for an impressive party treat.

      I would try one part vanilla vodka,one part godiva, and half part chocolate syrup. See how that tastes and adjust from there! You might try adding some chocolate milk or just regular milk too if you think you’d like that. Enjoy!
