Easter Chick Sugar Cookies

Sorry for the delay of posts in the past week — it’s been crazy busy over here! This week is our spring break, and while you might expect me to have all sorts of free time, I’ve packed my schedule full of errands, catching up on homework, cleaning, and working on a revamped template for the blog. For my new header I need 3 main photos, so I whipped up some yellow and fuschia sugar cookies to photograph (stay tuned!) and while I was coating my kitchen with royal icing for those, I figured I could make some Easter themed cookies as well:

I can remember drawing chicks like these and little bunnies popping out of broken eggs too when I was younger, so this is definitely a throwback for me. I like how the outline of the cookie is so simple — I didn’t need a fancy cookie cutter, I just bent a big circle one to make an oval. The sugar cookie dough and royal icing recipe I used can be found here. I got lazy and didn’t feel like dying icing black and orange, so used mini chocolate chips and orange tic tacs, plus they add a little 3D action.

This is my third attempt at sugar cookies with royal icing (see 1 and 2), and I feel more confident each time around. I could still use some work with the smoothness of my outlines, but I’m excited to keep trying new designs. I still have a long way to go (check out these amazing cookies by SugarBelle), but I’m having fun practicing in the meantime

Poor little fellow, he can’t help being cute AND delicious…

Have a great week and holiday weekend! I’m off to Florida with Ryan and Scott tomorrow, stay tuned for details from our trip and some adorable Disney-themed treats :)
